Week 2

This week was all about finalizing our concepts and concept art, and most importantly, finally working towards our first boss in the game; the Minotaur. A lot of progress has been done on the UI, VFX and attacks, but especially our modelling.

Early Modeling

The character art team got to work this week and began to capture our vision in our characters onto a 3D format.  The Minotaur and Main Character models were entirely fleshed out within the first week, thanks to Maya and James' quick working abilities. Meanwhile, figuring out how the owl creature would function, was on Uriel's plate. This also came with the question- how will they achieve a visually pleasing and functioning feathers? Will they render alright in engine? And so on and so forth.

The art team also developed color palettes and texture guides to ensure cohesion within the models to create a visually steady situation.

Arena and Environment

Along the modeling, we thought a bit more about our arena and environment in which our Minotaur boss inhabits. Since the boss' theme is very war themed we quickly came to the idea of having a ruins themed arena. This would consist of different worn down structures such as pillars, statues, chains and overgrown vegetation. Maybe the Arena was a long lost civilization with the Minotaur being the sole defender of the city.

VFX and Coding

A lot of experimenting was done this week as we dove into Houdini destruction and the Niagara system in unreal. Nevertheless a lot was learned, and the team came out with some cool abilities and flashy VFX. The foundational work for the game's skill tree was completed this week as well. The main design philosophy behind the skill tree system was to ensure that it was modular. Making the system modular allowed it to be expanded or reduced in size and depth based on our current needs of the game.

Final Thoughts

By the end of the week, many of us realize that organization and communication is a key factor in the making of our game. Not only did we learn a lot of skills in our respective fields, but to work as a unit and whole. We will take this into account as we work our way onto week 3.
